Chateau Latour
Château Latour is the most powerful and long-lasting of the Médoc 1er crus classés. Latour is situated in the south of the Pauillac appellation bordering St-Julien and its 65 hectares of vineyards are nearer to the Gironde estuary than any other 1st Growth.
Latour's vineyards are distinguished by their very high gravel content as well as their extraordinary depth, with many of the vines penetrating as far as 5 metres into the soil. They are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (80%), Merlot (15%), Cabernet Franc (4%) and Petit Verdot (1%).
The high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon makes Latour the most tannic and opaque in colour and impenetrable of all the 1st Growths when young, but, with extended cellaring and the overall impression is of intense, piercing, blackcurrant fruits, intermingled with cedarwood and bolstered by rich, ripe tannins. The very best Latour vintages can last for eternity and should not be approached before their 20th birthday.
