Chateau Mouton Rothschild
Château Mouton Rothschild was finally elevated to 1er Cru Classé status in 1973 after 50 years of sustained lobbying by the late Baron Philippe de Rothschild. Today it is run by his daughter Philippine de Rothschild.
Mouton Rothschild is located in the north of the Pauillac appellation, opposite Lafite - the vineyards lie on deep gravel beds over large stones, with the subsoil comprising clay, marl and limestone.
>Mouton Rothschild is typically a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Merlot. The high Cabernet Sauvignon content gives the wines a depth of rich cassis-like fruit rarely matched in Bordeaux, accompanied by aromas of lead pencil shavings, cigar boxes and often a hint of freshly-ground coffee beans.
They can take up to twenty years to open up fully and the best Mouton Rothschild vintages will continue improving for up to 50 years and sometimes even longer.
